Don't tell my husband) amount of time from my days. If you are familiar with <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_2" class="blsp-spelling-error">Pinterest</span> then you may or may not share my infatuation. If not, you need to get on the pin train with the rest of us. ;)<br /><br />Any-who, a while back we hosted a family reunion at my house. It was a beautiful day full of homemade ice cream and me avoiding having to play BINGO or any other sort of organized activity, for that matter. And because I have <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_3" class="blsp-spelling-error">OCD</span> and I like to make stuff, I started preparing for this little party months in advance. Buntings, and tissue paper poufs, and coffee filter flowers; lots and lots of coffee filter flowers. I quite literally dyed 2,200 coffee filters. No. Lie. It was time consuming and oddly soothing. And a little messy. Here is a photo of the scene of the craft:<br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixsvo-V1ELTZN0jie-GUAALQxhwmoTuVYF5FxtjCki7ohc2yfBgesHrTVaBJqhp09WYrpFPNZlZt2QtoPGHrDjQVEEhOFVFUWPpngsa_KQEuCnU5xomx5z5ceOYF0p8_lzx1suk-ENswQG/s1600/20110506210316.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; width: 320px; height: 240px; text-align: center; display: block; cursor: pointer;" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5648688964969242946" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixsvo-V1ELTZN0jie-GUAALQxhwmoTuVYF5FxtjCki7ohc2yfBgesHrTVaBJqhp09WYrpFPNZlZt2QtoPGHrDjQVEEhOFVFUWPpngsa_KQEuCnU5xomx5z5ceOYF0p8_lzx1suk-ENswQG/s320/20110506210316.jpg" /></a>You can see dyed and dried filters on the right, cut filters in the middle, and also the assembled ones, obviously. And truth be told I hadn't thought too much about my garden of filters until tonight when a certain <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_4" class="blsp-spelling-error">pinner</span> who <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_5" class="blsp-spelling-error">repinned</span> a pin I had pinned peaked my interest. It was none other than the great and talented <a href="http://www.auntpeaches.com/search/label/Coffee%20Filter%20Flowers">Aunt Peaches</a>, who just happened to be the very blogger who inspired my coffee filter flower extravaganza. I felt like a celebrity for a micro second, which is an unfortunate side effect of living in a very rural area. Another one is thinking that a trip to the grocery store counts as a social outing.<br /><br />Thank you Peaches, for making my day. :)</div>Debrahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00193953858998945134noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7553870711975616845.post-50443474634287630732011-08-25T09:45:00.002-05:002011-08-25T10:17:48.911-05:00One Year Later......How does one start up with a blog again after absolutely no posts for an entire year? I don't know, but here we go...
<br />
<br />So much and nothing really happened in the last year. I blinked my eyes and my son graduated from Kindergarten last may and started the first grade yesterday, my daughter is now walking, and my husband and I celebrated our 11 year anniversary. We still live in a little town on the prairie. I still go to the gas station across the street nearly every day to have some sort of social interaction outside of the house. Since we moved to a tiny town in the the sticks where we do not know anyone, speaking to other living, breathing adults face to face seems almost luxurious.
<br />
<br />But that will all change in the coming year as we are building a house in my home town next summer. I am very excited, very anxious, and completely obsessed with every tiny detail! So for the past few months I have been quietly scouring home decor blogs and magazines, getting ideas, trying to pin down my style.
<br />
<br />Looking back at some of my old posts is kind of funny. Chiavari chairs? Really? I did not end up buying those, don't worry. Every time I see them on a movie, in a magazine, at a wedding I kind of cringe at the thought that I told the whole world that I wanted them for my dining room table!
<br />
<br />I will soon have some updates about some of the other furniture makeovers that I have done, and what I have learned in the past year, like when it is OK to use latex when painting furniture, and when it absolutely is not, and why.
<br />
<br />So, if anyone is out there reading this, thank you! I can't promise that I will be posting often, but I will try not to go a year between posts again. ;)
<br />
<br />

We would sandwich crayon scrapings between two pieces of waxed paper and make "stained glass." We would make etchings of leaves on paper with crayons. My mother had the most beautiful flower gardens in the summer, and I remember folding flowers in waxed paper and pressing them in the pages of heavy books. About a week later, Mom would carefully take them out and seal them into the paper with an iron.<br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Simple pleasures...... :)<br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;">I may be older now, but I am still a kid at heart. I love to color. I love coloring books and coloring pages. After I finished printing out my monogram yesterday I decided that it needed some color; and here is how I did it!<br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;">You will need:<br /><ul><li>Fabric</li><li>Crayons-plain old crayons</li><li>Iron and ironing board</li><li>2 sheets of paper</li></ul><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRBCgSsG2QcvTdwOX26WhSxlBfYdnNFoJMtge3ao8f0EuPGgYx_48GgHbQ4SXWiX6cw7dUbwgMSSSsu1t0xNb2dZBZNPvkWd_YUEyNwWMK8cBi2SrHaRC10_I2b5antzHvvjV2tIcWhrBN/s1600/kindergartenandmonogram+013.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRBCgSsG2QcvTdwOX26WhSxlBfYdnNFoJMtge3ao8f0EuPGgYx_48GgHbQ4SXWiX6cw7dUbwgMSSSsu1t0xNb2dZBZNPvkWd_YUEyNwWMK8cBi2SrHaRC10_I2b5antzHvvjV2tIcWhrBN/s320/kindergartenandmonogram+013.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5509113903555920242" border="0" /></a><br />Let's get started!<br /><br />First, color your fabric. Duh, right?<br />I like to layer my colors. Just have fun with it!<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUlnu8dh8JPzKMD2U5I3YwolcSL3ANzefQ8FAM9hm44bUw5gCwgx57J0E-gUZHc3y0lw2i93Lznp2ce6C2_g8BFcwppevXoh1YCiRVX409NPzSeIknFYwYItBrghGgop4YVwA0xuLOYTk9/s1600/kindergartenandmonogram+014.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUlnu8dh8JPzKMD2U5I3YwolcSL3ANzefQ8FAM9hm44bUw5gCwgx57J0E-gUZHc3y0lw2i93Lznp2ce6C2_g8BFcwppevXoh1YCiRVX409NPzSeIknFYwYItBrghGgop4YVwA0xuLOYTk9/s320/kindergartenandmonogram+014.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5509124561086423202" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhE_jYr5tiaGrqQ6wH3e3o23GA3asv4I9bPiPl7ry8ny9fTKEh9raWA7KNZxVgLNcvw0aVZ3AKM6xvkjYxG4CvjY1Yb5e5KopnBV2KAxk1tywifT8-rNz1gBEIx8RTDIsq22ecYBPB-14sh/s1600/kindergartenandmonogram+015.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhE_jYr5tiaGrqQ6wH3e3o23GA3asv4I9bPiPl7ry8ny9fTKEh9raWA7KNZxVgLNcvw0aVZ3AKM6xvkjYxG4CvjY1Yb5e5KopnBV2KAxk1tywifT8-rNz1gBEIx8RTDIsq22ecYBPB-14sh/s320/kindergartenandmonogram+015.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5509125407673158994" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Now that I have finished coloring, I am going set the color with some heat. As you all know, crayons are made of wax, and wax melts. So, when you apply heat the color will kind of melt into the fabric. This is where the two sheets of paper come in: you are going to want to put a piece of paper under your fabric to protect your ironing board, and one on top of your fabric to keep the crayon wax off of your iron.<br /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6uw1ispTMhdGMseiP9GdWhgpxg2mvmFUqXgqL_LhByAZwRmg91YuzWz3P6ZsqZZTA823rErh4Xbu4j00KMAZHn7ZVOigiz4oEyuMMmiWiEIbCkgWuGJK0rM8sboEqf49TIUaQtjU0tuT0/s1600/kindergartenandmonogram+008.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6uw1ispTMhdGMseiP9GdWhgpxg2mvmFUqXgqL_LhByAZwRmg91YuzWz3P6ZsqZZTA823rErh4Xbu4j00KMAZHn7ZVOigiz4oEyuMMmiWiEIbCkgWuGJK0rM8sboEqf49TIUaQtjU0tuT0/s320/kindergartenandmonogram+008.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5509128910579779010" border="0" /></a><br /><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMemmFaYcfdSmMTSaPbgQkOUvGRpxfS6f0lvJrearFaULoYjLYjvhnc9ZXmXi5ytyui48oDYUu8Q5sCDGKrTSedL7WcnJtx86uHEaWDt_Wel49Is35M8ZKXoXOcFSi_xb9dX6vBMrNbyoI/s1600/kindergartenandmonogram+017.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMemmFaYcfdSmMTSaPbgQkOUvGRpxfS6f0lvJrearFaULoYjLYjvhnc9ZXmXi5ytyui48oDYUu8Q5sCDGKrTSedL7WcnJtx86uHEaWDt_Wel49Is35M8ZKXoXOcFSi_xb9dX6vBMrNbyoI/s320/kindergartenandmonogram+017.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5509129386732324978" border="0" /></a><span style="font-size:78%;">(Note to self: turn off the flash when taking close-ups.)<br /><br /><br /></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEAJaZ0WHAwQ4EHKg4k_LlIlpTQL86sIedDyZWLVD_12m2fxjSCbEgzTbt-ZNEEMQCWGSWkZO_ShOJMGWPEiOJuX6xEuEYBIl7dYW1oXl4hSOooBscozlHVZmsuLYaDZqjttPjKvBUdPeM/s1600/kindergartenandmonogram+018.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEAJaZ0WHAwQ4EHKg4k_LlIlpTQL86sIedDyZWLVD_12m2fxjSCbEgzTbt-ZNEEMQCWGSWkZO_ShOJMGWPEiOJuX6xEuEYBIl7dYW1oXl4hSOooBscozlHVZmsuLYaDZqjttPjKvBUdPeM/s320/kindergartenandmonogram+018.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5509130992671593058" border="0" /></a><br />Lovely!<br /><br />I am not done yet, but the rest will have to wait for another post!<br /><br />Have a great night!<br /></div>Debrahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00193953858998945134noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7553870711975616845.post-85964537177999692332010-08-23T18:59:00.010-05:002010-08-23T19:39:54.606-05:00More Stuff That I've Made<div style="text-align: center; font-weight: bold;">A friend asked me to post more of the things that I have made, so here you go!<br /></div><div style="text-align: center; font-weight: bold;"><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmdBQuuNgL3O5awRgy-oCVC4XikQVMO5lj6AlL5fmUNGpq6AR63FjrMI4OfURluRoouisxDXnT_nYHR4BCBBUQYkfmvFhEx5A2SKiC45KrT7IFDi0TyF56SBNCNDqJEpR-Y6Aj8UIQRcHt/s1600/kindergartenandmonogram+003.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmdBQuuNgL3O5awRgy-oCVC4XikQVMO5lj6AlL5fmUNGpq6AR63FjrMI4OfURluRoouisxDXnT_nYHR4BCBBUQYkfmvFhEx5A2SKiC45KrT7IFDi0TyF56SBNCNDqJEpR-Y6Aj8UIQRcHt/s320/kindergartenandmonogram+003.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5508760904589225874" border="0" /></a><br /><br />This is a whole-cloth quilt made with<a href="http://www.fabric.com/quilting-fabric-shop-by-designer-amy-butler-designer-cotton-print-fabric.aspx"> Amy Butler</a> fabric. This is not a new technique, but it is so very handy for many different types of crafty goodness.</span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Here is what you will need:</span><br /><br /><ul style="font-weight: bold;"><li>Fabric (solid, light colored works best.)</li><li>Freezer paper (found in wax paper aisle.)</li><li>Iron and ironing board</li><li>Printer</li><li>Printer paper</li><li>Computer</li><li>Pen</li><li>Ruler<br /></li><li>Scissors</li></ul><span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:100%;" ><span>Let's get started!</span> <span>First, iron your fabric. You will need a piece that is just a bit larger than your printer paper. Once your fabric is ironed, cut a piece of freezer paper just larger than your fabric. Place the freezer paper over the fabric and run a warm, dry iron over it. You may have to play with the temp a bit, the idea is to get the freezer paper to stick to your fabric</span></span><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">.</span><br /></span><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrpPVS9vMB0e-CN8GcttuQXSjrRLyTXc-p7W5xh0MSXk74lIg8vpy4bCGc2Rs6frTR5rhmQ1Uw3Zvtg4XM5xwXHs_q4Jwnrc5pLrNkuJZSQu_lBF5OD195EVHyD8zRLtpltGqFYwsVfPdJ/s1600/kindergartenandmonogram+008.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrpPVS9vMB0e-CN8GcttuQXSjrRLyTXc-p7W5xh0MSXk74lIg8vpy4bCGc2Rs6frTR5rhmQ1Uw3Zvtg4XM5xwXHs_q4Jwnrc5pLrNkuJZSQu_lBF5OD195EVHyD8zRLtpltGqFYwsVfPdJ/s320/kindergartenandmonogram+008.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5508610171534529394" border="0" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:130%;" ><br /></span><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:100%;" >Now, take a piece of printer paper and lie it on top of the freezer paper that you have bonded to your fabric. It is a great way to add something special to so many handmade items; plus it is very relaxing! This is a quick little tutorial to show you an easy way to add stitching to paper. I will be using a paper doily today, but this method also works really well with paper that is opaque.<br /><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Let's get started!<br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;">First, choose your design and trace it on your paper. (If your paper is opaque you will need to use a light box, or you can tape it to a bright window to help see the pattern.) This one is from Jenny Hart's book Sublime Stitching. If you have not checked out Jenny's designs you need to; they are edgy, fun and fresh. No cutesy-teddy bears or country-bonnet girls to be found. You can find her patterns<a href="http://sublimestitching.com/transferpreview.html"> here</a>.<br /></div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKhZb6CBALpi-9BarwglqTEqjT1iSSKrOEPDd-RChvtQvN0njyEkD4q6WZTQ7Ov-FwY60KEw7lj8uux4BxfMS3DpvakUzDjHGUmbRDeSfQUMXI6rL6cI0V9xzvrRwIli5r46VlYsX2XhzV/s1600/embroider+on+paper+016.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKhZb6CBALpi-9BarwglqTEqjT1iSSKrOEPDd-RChvtQvN0njyEkD4q6WZTQ7Ov-FwY60KEw7lj8uux4BxfMS3DpvakUzDjHGUmbRDeSfQUMXI6rL6cI0V9xzvrRwIli5r46VlYsX2XhzV/s320/embroider+on+paper+016.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5506801758405495186" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: center;">Next, take your needle and poke little holes on the lines of the pattern.<br /><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeS-wdvf_KjUrcUrGh2gFjL7eSic0o0OjGB3pe31COtMfStc_hy5lWF4fGwH6w4SXl2q4c1y084ucvmSVX6t5jo9O57clVm9UVh3Krodftxq39MzZvQBRYfbCVPupEFLD5-bK_H2WAP17n/s1600/embroider+on+paper+017.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeS-wdvf_KjUrcUrGh2gFjL7eSic0o0OjGB3pe31COtMfStc_hy5lWF4fGwH6w4SXl2q4c1y084ucvmSVX6t5jo9O57clVm9UVh3Krodftxq39MzZvQBRYfbCVPupEFLD5-bK_H2WAP17n/s320/embroider+on+paper+017.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5506802654733144258" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: center;">Try to keep the holes spaced evenly. She can read it too, I guess.<br /><br />Way back in March, I purchased a copy of the book <a href="http://www.hazelandmelvin.com/products/book/one-yard-wonders">One Yard Wonders</a> by Rebecca Yaker of<a href="http://www.hazelandmelvin.com/"> <span style="font-style: italic;">Hazel and Melvin's Room</span></a>, and Patricia Hoskins of <a href="http://www.craftyplanet.com/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Crafty Plane</span>t</a>. (Crafty Planet is in Minneapolis: I <span style="font-style: italic;"> must</span> go there on my next trip to the Twin Cities.) As the title implies this book is a collection of sewing patterns that use no more than one yard of fabric. It offers a great variety of things to create: clothing for women, children, and even your pooch. There are home decor projects, organization projects, and, of course, bags and purses. In the front of the book, there is a pocket to hold all of the patterns. The directions seem to all be pretty straight forward, but there are errors in quite a few of them; the corrections can be found<a href="http://www.storey.com/correct_book.php?isbn=9781603424493"> here</a>.<br /><br />My oldest sister's birthday was in April. I told her to pick out anything in the book, and I would make it for her. She chose the Flouncy Bag found on page 156. I had just made one for my "secret pal" at my son's elementary school, so I knew there were errors in the measurements. I went online and made the changes. Unfortunately, not all of the errors had been published yet, and I did not bother to check back<span style="font-style: italic;"> before</span> I got around to making the bag for her just this week. (I know it is August, but I have a 3 1/2 month old; cut me some slack! ;) ) It all worked out in the end, and the bag is quite fabulous. Fun fact: a kid who lived next door to me as a child painted this and it hung in his house. Weird. Anyway...I took out the painting and set it aside. (And no, you can't have it; it is mine.) I spray primed and painted the frame white. The frame is 18x24 inches and I didn't have any backing for it, so it sat in my basement until I spied some Elmer's foam board at Target for $2.49. I know this project has been done one thousand times over, but here is my version anyway.<br /><br />For this project you will need:<br /><br /><ul style="text-align: center;"><li>hot glue gun</li><li>a frame without glass<br /></li><li>foam board or cardboard for backing (if the frame does not have any)</li><li>cork tiles </li><li>Exacto or utility knife</li><li>pen<br /></li><li>fabric<br /></li></ul><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1mcnZBGsH7m-5k91htK3wuZnYlMbJ6UK8UU7DhfO8yP95tlKvVUJHseMiqJwqUTDLoUbgR7MB5oUj6RdVLYyqIvDrKV79BttWnK1DrOxhXoQg9Lyp_aSvFaq9D8MwGfY3qAsW8P6X68kQ/s1600/corkboard+earring+clips+001.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1mcnZBGsH7m-5k91htK3wuZnYlMbJ6UK8UU7DhfO8yP95tlKvVUJHseMiqJwqUTDLoUbgR7MB5oUj6RdVLYyqIvDrKV79BttWnK1DrOxhXoQg9Lyp_aSvFaq9D8MwGfY3qAsW8P6X68kQ/s320/corkboard+earring+clips+001.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5504177015428603282" border="0" /></a>First, I placed the frame on the foam board and traced inside the frame with a pen where I would need to cut. That's right; they are GIVING AWAY a machine that is worth $1,100. Bless their hearts.<br /><br />As a little girl I would watch my mother sew. She made clothes and curtains. She would repair and mend store bought items that had been "loved" a little too much. She made a bedspread for the bed that I share with my sister. I can still see the fabric in my mind; little red roses on a light pink background. Sewing was comfortable for her; it was home.<br /><br />Time marched on. All of her babies grew up, got married, and started having babies of their own. She had a great little craft room in her basement that she would escape to now and then, but the need for sewing every day had left with us kids.<br /><br />My mother passed away suddenly in August of 2004. She died the day that I was going to tell her that I was pregnant. I was getting ready to have my first baby, but I wasn't anyone's baby anymore.<br /><br />In the months to come my brother, sisters and I had the daunting task of dividing up all of Mom's things. We promised one another that we would not fight over her "stuff" because we knew that it would have broken her heart. I got the Kirby; at the time it was all that I really wanted. One of my sisters took her sewing machine and serger, and later gave the serger to me. We sold Mom's house in the summer of 2005 and time marched on once again.<br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br />One of my favorite photos:<br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSuyRRaPSwzr0fLtk143o9VVJ6o3jBB-D0vKPSzYR-uZfzvXlC6qs-0NL2nh9elp3pj_i5hjn0iJ90HsQyyv_P0N4elPC5pNiu9eWqQgxxakQCO35QC9zTOvOA_mBgY6DwI8cNZPGhb-YD/s1600/IMG_0968.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSuyRRaPSwzr0fLtk143o9VVJ6o3jBB-D0vKPSzYR-uZfzvXlC6qs-0NL2nh9elp3pj_i5hjn0iJ90HsQyyv_P0N4elPC5pNiu9eWqQgxxakQCO35QC9zTOvOA_mBgY6DwI8cNZPGhb-YD/s320/IMG_0968.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503841281644462258" border="0" /></a>Simon, Fall of 2006<br /></div><br />In the summer of 2007 my husband took a job in a very rural area. I gave up cutting hair when we moved. I didn't just miss working, I missed the creative outlet that being a hair stylist had given me. So I began to craft. It started with knitting. And then I learned to embroider. For my 33rd birthday my mother-in-law gave me my very first sewing machine; I was instantly hooked. I love taking yards of flat fabric and molding, crafting, and sewing them into something of use. Sewing is like therapy to me. It feels like home; it feels like Mom.<br /><br />I am on a mission to recreate my home. I will be making curtains, pillows, and all of the other things that make a house a home. The most ambitious task that I will be tackling will be a slipcover for my L-shaped sectional. Winning a new serger would not only make all of these projects much, much easier, it would make the end result more durable. This is a must since I have two little munchkins who will be "loving" all of the finished projects in the years to come.<br /><br />How would my life be better with a new serger? I believe that a new serger would encourage me to keep challenging myself with more difficult projects. It would allow me to spread my wings by taking on sewing jobs for some extra spending money. But the biggest benefit of all will most certainly be the time spent instilling a love of sewing in my kids, just like my mom did for me all those years ago.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;">Sophie, watching Mama sew.<br /></div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1jtXjSwSicIt21ASEfwLgAEe2Wz7HKxfeSsq70lHhCcwlClKNAFGaA2LwSpAgwCiPSuEiBR3-EgrzivR1evJoi_qn_pEN_UQ1ebsqe9o0fyD8kJ8h8O70hxjdOjilcXNlZs6ciNCd6lYO/s1600/credenza+010.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1jtXjSwSicIt21ASEfwLgAEe2Wz7HKxfeSsq70lHhCcwlClKNAFGaA2LwSpAgwCiPSuEiBR3-EgrzivR1evJoi_qn_pEN_UQ1ebsqe9o0fyD8kJ8h8O70hxjdOjilcXNlZs6ciNCd6lYO/s320/credenza+010.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503843967726931362" border="0" /></a>Debrahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00193953858998945134noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7553870711975616845.post-5957691859507709542010-08-04T14:23:00.014-05:002010-08-14T21:09:23.996-05:00Something I Made (and a Book Review, Too)<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlEAKkZIpIbSWj6jJWj90AOsUu5SZkwHlTsM1s5ym0NDyuxk6V7X3pFm7rZM76XrYeF5VauEH_iWa8Zcjcl8EwenC7JM_B4f0xQvQyg-_hnDXpo1l_eRa2tCmWzd6Gn3qTZv44Hs-zW9mn/s1600/credenza+006.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlEAKkZIpIbSWj6jJWj90AOsUu5SZkwHlTsM1s5ym0NDyuxk6V7X3pFm7rZM76XrYeF5VauEH_iWa8Zcjcl8EwenC7JM_B4f0xQvQyg-_hnDXpo1l_eRa2tCmWzd6Gn3qTZv44Hs-zW9mn/s320/credenza+006.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501651168613294402" border="0" /></a><br />I can remember exactly where I was (sitting on my sister's couch) and what I was doing (flipping through a D.I.Y. magazine) when I first saw<a href="http://www.amybutlerdesign.com/products/fabrics_top.php?fabric=nigella&flid=11"> Amy Butler's fabric.</a> It was love at first sight. Just one problem: I didn't know how to sew. In fact, I had not even made an attempt at sewing since the eighth-grade duffel bag debacle. Even so, I would waste enormous amounts of time online gazing at her fabrics and things made with her fabrics.<br /><br />Skip ahead to my 33rd birthday: I asked for a sewing machine and my mother-in-law delivered. I was so anxious. Sure that I would again fail miserably, I left it in the box for days. Then I took it out, set it up, drew some straight lines on a piece of fabric, and started to sew. And I could not stop. I made blanket after blanket. I made three <a href="http://www.made-by-rae.com/2008/04/free-itty-bitty-baby-dress-pattern.html">Itty Bitty Baby Dress</a>es and I made the infamous<a href="http://www.made-by-rae.com/2009/02/free-buttercup-bag-sewing-pattern.html"> Buttercup Bag</a>, both from <a href="http://www.made-by-rae.com/">Made by Rae</a>. I could not get enough and still can't.<br /><br />Back to the subject. Recently I made the Easy Empire Waist Top from<a href="http://www.amybutlerdesign.expressfulfillment.com/ProductSpec.asp?PRODUCTID=1540"> Amy Butler's Little Stitches for Little Ones.</a> This is the third item that I have made from this book; the first two being the Snuggie Wrap Blanket and the Modern Diaper Bag. I made the blanket first and noticed that the instructions were hard to follow; I had to read and reread each step multiple times. Even with all of the problems I had following the pattern, the blanket turned out really nice. The Modern Diaper Bag was a nightmare. It took me an entire day just to cut the pattern from the fabric and multiple layers of interfacing that was called for in the materials list. There are 23 steps with multiple sub-steps in this pattern with only three tiny diagrams to guide you along. The instructions were extremely complicated, but I finished it, and it does look nice. When I started the Easy Empire-Waist Top, I knew what I was in for. Once again the instructions were difficult to follow, and the diagrams were of little help. By the time I got to the lower panel, I just winged it and did what I thought would look nice and it does!<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;">Here it is:<br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMr9GiNPFf5ffCwO3Ow_et7uFwPy0Y7kQpmj1EET-f27YSHZTnSYhQZfVvFRA3Q5gvDZ8owORgk_kkbOTeHMEpf1N0yrDRX1Bnq9Dg8lb8hXNMs2j2XJ9GOroFHVOD4g4V-YgfbiSYKvw_/s1600/amy+butler+dress+005.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMr9GiNPFf5ffCwO3Ow_et7uFwPy0Y7kQpmj1EET-f27YSHZTnSYhQZfVvFRA3Q5gvDZ8owORgk_kkbOTeHMEpf1N0yrDRX1Bnq9Dg8lb8hXNMs2j2XJ9GOroFHVOD4g4V-YgfbiSYKvw_/s320/amy+butler+dress+005.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501647336589319218" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: center;">I had such trouble with the first sleeve that when I got to the second sleeve, I again winged it.<br /></div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSclXVnA4oZkLW6y_x3kQ-Eql4zB0tTZBI_70KsVscEjL_oJi7B3Mu5iBtrTnx2GZ1HruCzc2EVTa9E_0yYsLK3IGxSjQIc1N7nO7VKvnpZ0EeKTMFx_8qqB347YT4iVsTxROFQRHBAkBf/s1600/amy+butler+dress+002.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSclXVnA4oZkLW6y_x3kQ-Eql4zB0tTZBI_70KsVscEjL_oJi7B3Mu5iBtrTnx2GZ1HruCzc2EVTa9E_0yYsLK3IGxSjQIc1N7nO7VKvnpZ0EeKTMFx_8qqB347YT4iVsTxROFQRHBAkBf/s320/amy+butler+dress+002.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501647880952173570" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: center;">Here is the bottom panel; it has a split side:<br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9gS7uS1IR3naV5N8hvcR6F-rvjjGU0UJdGFhwpha1DcXd8PRoEwZkrEI8_WFbz4R6-sh_1Xr-V4k-rUh7AU9fGkdDkjv1VZ10ipdqAdBN7YxCO0oVxllCgZcyN0EmctErZqUztlS9Z1Uh/s1600/amy+butler+dress+003.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9gS7uS1IR3naV5N8hvcR6F-rvjjGU0UJdGFhwpha1DcXd8PRoEwZkrEI8_WFbz4R6-sh_1Xr-V4k-rUh7AU9fGkdDkjv1VZ10ipdqAdBN7YxCO0oVxllCgZcyN0EmctErZqUztlS9Z1Uh/s320/amy+butler+dress+003.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501648546584447714" border="0" /></a>And a pretty little vintage button for the back:<br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSycLXdLcOBilRsFXHxbdLRfzsj7JYhXt3DcCZPdSrP7TUTS1aOLatS9Lyxczg1nQnxSOrwE7Rfrx8ZbpZ61KEZeogmN7HW3F98FKLOalPLXSzr0Pdde-Rc-YO9xm77jlHeqon87i3h0y9/s1600/amy+butler+dress+004.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSycLXdLcOBilRsFXHxbdLRfzsj7JYhXt3DcCZPdSrP7TUTS1aOLatS9Lyxczg1nQnxSOrwE7Rfrx8ZbpZ61KEZeogmN7HW3F98FKLOalPLXSzr0Pdde-Rc-YO9xm77jlHeqon87i3h0y9/s320/amy+butler+dress+004.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501648929720540866" border="0" /></a>The floral patterned fabric is from a pillow case that I picked up at a garage sale. Since then I have been obsessing over tables. I want something fabulous, but with a fabulously low price tag, and I have been surfing every site imaginable without a lot of luck. Laß Mich Zählen Wie ...Germany, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways...<br /><br />Number one would be food and, of course, beer. When it comes to these two areas, the Germans have it down. I have been lucky enough to visit Germany twice; once in high school, and again in 2003 to stay with my very best friend Stephie.<br /><br />Stephie was stationed near Wurzberg, which is near Frankfurt. During my stay we took a road trip through Bavaria. We saw a few of King Ludwig's castles: <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linderhof_Palace">Schloss Linderhof</a>,<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hohenschwangau_Castle"> </a><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linderhof_Palace">Hohenschwangau</a>, and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuschwanstein_Castle">Neuschwanstein</a>..to be exact. We stayed a couple of days in Munich, where we took a<a href="http://www.mikesbiketours.com/munich/"> Mike's Bike Tour</a>-one of the funnest things that I have done in my entire life, and went to the<a href="http://www.hofbraeuhaus.de/"> Hofbrauhaus</a>. But the two most delicious moments for me were these: eating fladle suppe (pancake soup) at a little restaurant right down a slope from Hohenschwangau, and staying and eating at the<a href="http://www.roemischer-kaiser.com/indexe.html"> <b>Hotel »Römischer Kaiser«</b> </a><b> in Triberg-Nußbach</b>. The owner was at one time a chef. I don't even know exactly what it was that I ate, but I know that it was hands down the best meal of my life. Period.<br /><br />Ever since my 2003 trip, I have searched high and low for authentic German recipes; which to me means no shortcuts; absolutely nothing from a can or a box. A few years ago I found a recipe for Jaeger Schnitzel on the internet that seemed pretty close to what a person would find in Germany. My sister Lisa and I tweaked it a bit and I posted it on Recipezaar.com, which is now food.com. I made it recently for my and the Mr.'s ten year anniversary, and here is the pic:<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVGkcKTQROt7M_6m-Xqducr3YTpgPrOsvyUVwIBxa_HiP_-oTH6-AT6RWkKcYZB5ZlPRZZIYaovqiN2poSag66eokGX7uY6mTZQK5LvkuztMdg34DxXwoMWFL0e_t6WqNMGBuTvmVprVN-/s1600/credenza+003.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVGkcKTQROt7M_6m-Xqducr3YTpgPrOsvyUVwIBxa_HiP_-oTH6-AT6RWkKcYZB5ZlPRZZIYaovqiN2poSag66eokGX7uY6mTZQK5LvkuztMdg34DxXwoMWFL0e_t6WqNMGBuTvmVprVN-/s320/credenza+003.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5500638896396896274" border="0" /></a><br />and here is the recipe:<a href="http://www.food.com/recipe/jaeger-schnitzel-276227"> Jaeger Schnitzel</a><br /><br />Have a delicious day!<br /></div>Debrahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00193953858998945134noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7553870711975616845.post-24359636923948490642010-07-30T16:49:00.011-05:002010-07-30T17:56:25.879-05:00Everything Old Is New Again: Credenza RevealI have no excuse as to why it has taken so long to get this post up other than sheer laziness. As you can see in the photo, I used a putty knife to gently pry off that thing that I am prying off in the picture. I have no idea what it is called and I am okay with that. I have tried many times over the years to figure out how to get the fabric out and replace it with something prettier, but the only way that I can see it happening is by completely removing the stereo and record player mechanisms, and I do not want to because they still work, so the fabric stayed. I used blue painters tape and paper to protect it from drips.<br /></div><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrRCxs75rnP5vL1t-bKSFPfz8TGXOVTT9dPcY992AJgSTxXp62PH_OM4fK-ZyzZmkmede_Zx0Di5KKEjXmlI-IUMQrtCRpy4F7bC-dIct_KKB3HYT5vzPJwQ_7819vWEcv8i12mB9vJ3im/s1600/credenza+008.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrRCxs75rnP5vL1t-bKSFPfz8TGXOVTT9dPcY992AJgSTxXp62PH_OM4fK-ZyzZmkmede_Zx0Di5KKEjXmlI-IUMQrtCRpy4F7bC-dIct_KKB3HYT5vzPJwQ_7819vWEcv8i12mB9vJ3im/s320/credenza+008.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499823743927602658" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: center;">Next, I gave her a light sanding with 150 grit sand paper. Two coats of Benjamin Moore's Aura paint in "slip" (AF-605.)<br />Now, let me just say this: I am in love with Benjamin Moore paint. Their color selection is outstanding and the paint itself is of great quality; however, I will not use their Aura paint when painting furniture again. It dries too fast and the label advises against using products like Floetrol. Instead they want you to use their paint extender. Benjamin Moore, I love you, but for $50 a gallon/$20 a quart, this stuff should practically put itself on. Just sayin'.<br /></div><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEica1CrzCbwHoqSSSoE7XSxr_hjaa4AzilYOfN_pCp09dyLg5Zi0moUtSfqHMGM0dPAaZldNlPMi_toFwQkJ9Z3JeCy_CTIMENlv96FxCtZ3ittj-QhtLWP4qeU7FdMs5SdEqDtgRd8tlfo/s1600/credenza+013.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEica1CrzCbwHoqSSSoE7XSxr_hjaa4AzilYOfN_pCp09dyLg5Zi0moUtSfqHMGM0dPAaZldNlPMi_toFwQkJ9Z3JeCy_CTIMENlv96FxCtZ3ittj-QhtLWP4qeU7FdMs5SdEqDtgRd8tlfo/s320/credenza+013.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499831028245180194" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;">I actually poured it on the top and spread it with my brush as quickly as I could, but it still dragged and roped. Like many people of her generation who grew up during the depression, she was frugal. However, the things that she did buy were of good quality. When she passed away, I was lucky enough to get an old Admiral credenza-style entertainment center that she had bought in the late '60's. It has a radio on one side, a turntable on the other, and it once housed a television in the middle.<br /><br />When we first brought it home, we put our television on top and used it in our living room. It was literally the only piece of furniture in the room. We had no couch, no chair, nothing. So we would lie on a beanbag and watch from the floor. When we finally did get furniture, the credenza was moved to the basement.<br /><br />Since we have moved, we have used it as a computer desk. Our printer is where the t.v. once was, and our laptop sits on top.<br /><br /><br />One day when I was fixing some nail pops, my then three year old got ahold of a 5-in-1 putty knife. He then began to carve into my brand new t.v. console, and before I could catch him, he dragged it across Grandma's credenza. I have left it that way for two years, not quite knowing what to do with it. That all changed this weekend when I was looking at paint swatches at my favorite Benjamin Moore dealer, Lamotte's Paint and Glass. Now as the post title suggests, this is only a sneak peek; so here is the before:</span><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_J_DQ3ONStD0eD_b1eQkuK1DXVO-Y649-xpNDwCUOJiVPrwQB5EXtjZskGDzimWtPqL_lIEz5Op5dgU64-iJGetlCEXvBmc871Lvtt9hNBggv8O2vRtSd9ITKZVusMeVME2_wQAL9xF1q/s1600/buffet+and+baptism+018.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_J_DQ3ONStD0eD_b1eQkuK1DXVO-Y649-xpNDwCUOJiVPrwQB5EXtjZskGDzimWtPqL_lIEz5Op5dgU64-iJGetlCEXvBmc871Lvtt9hNBggv8O2vRtSd9ITKZVusMeVME2_wQAL9xF1q/s320/buffet+and+baptism+018.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5495668427360749410" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7gYI_9Mnwpg4KIAcuM2plcx8Zt0eGb80uWf_Oa-xUxGBTWGKgM9cwOJn1Wjq1OmVJZJeBeClGAAgc5PpLAxbQYIoM9X7Dfq_9r2pOmO6s4ySP1hbkSHW17xu_WO4PYd2aXMx6BxHx7QFH/s1600/buffet+and+baptism+019.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7gYI_9Mnwpg4KIAcuM2plcx8Zt0eGb80uWf_Oa-xUxGBTWGKgM9cwOJn1Wjq1OmVJZJeBeClGAAgc5PpLAxbQYIoM9X7Dfq_9r2pOmO6s4ySP1hbkSHW17xu_WO4PYd2aXMx6BxHx7QFH/s320/buffet+and+baptism+019.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5495668873677849794" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;">and I can't wait to show you the after!<br /></div>Debrahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00193953858998945134noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7553870711975616845.post-46598011142229096852010-07-16T12:53:00.000-05:002010-07-16T18:24:49.154-05:00Yesterday, Today, and TomorrowYesterday marked ten years of wedded bliss to my husband, Jared. In the past 10 years we have lived in 3 towns, had 2 lovely children, and gone through more than a half-dozen cars. In 10 years I lost my mother, and my grandmother, and we lost a pregnancy; and he was my best friend through it all. Thank you, Jerry.<br /><br />Now, today I worked on an entertainment center that will soon be a kitchen for Simon and Sophie. I have stalked many, many blogs getting ideas and will throw in a few of my own, too. It has been a labor of love, and I can't wait to show it to all of you!<br /><br />Tomorrow I will be going to my very first auction sale. Not only will it be a first for me, it will hopefully be an opportunity to "win" back some pieces that have ties to my husband's family. Apparently, the owner of the estate had purchased a booth and a table at auction that had been in a bar/cafe run by Jared's paternal grandparents.<br /><br />Wish us luck! I have been "blurking" (blog lurking) around on blogs run by such amazingly talented people, like Centsational Girl, and Prudent Baby, and A Penny Saved, and while I felt so very inspired, I also began to feel so very inadequate. Especially when I would see posts like <a href="http://www.apennysavedblog.com/2009/07/no-sew-chair-ruffles.html">this</a>, and <a href="http://allthingsbeautiful-charity.blogspot.com/2010/04/jewelry-box-makeover.html">this</a>, and <a href="http://www.centsationalgirl.com/2010/02/cream-cabinet-makeover/">this one</a>; which nearly made me hyperventilate and pass out.<br /><br />But today I am taking the plunge into the world of blogging. I may not be the best at this, but I don't think that I will be the worst either. So............without further ado:<br /><br /></span></span><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"> My $45-Buffet Makeover.</span></span><br /></div><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-family:georgia;"><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_touYO6XhMjU4vVUmW-uwpCrHLVomLruAwM6bVHWue9ul21ObRN_2eatZ-Iy_dF1Mtx4SwLPeiNcXKU1g2Dq0LWCZUQEsOJOyqT20pGle68rjPk8gg84VfTCt6AP_Mz_Jli4cHXPK7BQE/s1600/various+107.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_touYO6XhMjU4vVUmW-uwpCrHLVomLruAwM6bVHWue9ul21ObRN_2eatZ-Iy_dF1Mtx4SwLPeiNcXKU1g2Dq0LWCZUQEsOJOyqT20pGle68rjPk8gg84VfTCt6AP_Mz_Jli4cHXPK7BQE/s320/various+107.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5493588344317312290" border="0" /></a><br /></span></span><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-family:georgia;">The doors were warped, so they had to come out. I used<a href="http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=222"> Zinsser Cover Stain Primer</a> (</span></span><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-family:georgia;">oil based.</span></span>) When it comes to adding durability to a piece this stuff can't be beat, in my humble opinion. Plus, the short dry time means that I was able to get 2 coats of primer on in one day. Centsational Girl has a great post on the topic of primers<a href="http://www.centsationalgirl.com/2009/05/diy-painted-thrift-store-cabinet/#more-464"> here</a>.<br /><br />After a light sanding with 220 grit sandpaper, I put on two coats of latex paint. I used <a href="http://www.flood.com/paint-additive-solutions/products/view-product.jsp?productId=12&gclid=CNCA3eOV6qICFRD75wod4AL97g">Floetrol</a>, a paint conditioner that truly does help to keep brush strokes to a minimum. Because latex paint can take up to two weeks to cure completely, I put on three coats of <a href="http://www.minwax.com/products/interior_clear_protective_finishes/polycrylic_protective_finish.html">Minwax Polycrylic</a> - a water-based polyurethane that will protect latex paint from chips and scrapes.<br /></div><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKqQ0I_nd-VvLmxQvqqAfgMBBy79p5zgY51ymZmCwJ2WDoGlCmWyN11ZVYSTtIzMXpZyu6QegK4YkH8xShWC6Fy4blJyDX-Dd6t27ZW7LoUjsEXjb6hUT5byuqlaLeCJUoVWcAznTb-5dN/s1600/buffet+and+baptism+001.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKqQ0I_nd-VvLmxQvqqAfgMBBy79p5zgY51ymZmCwJ2WDoGlCmWyN11ZVYSTtIzMXpZyu6QegK4YkH8xShWC6Fy4blJyDX-Dd6t27ZW7LoUjsEXjb6hUT5byuqlaLeCJUoVWcAznTb-5dN/s320/buffet+and+baptism+001.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5493591364624168898" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;">And finally, I sewed some quick pleated curtains from unbleached cotton and hung them with inexpensive sash rods where the doors once were.
